It is done.




We invite you to enter our cave of curiosity and contradiction. A Black Box Theatre is by essence a transformative and versatile space, a King chameleon of rooms. This performance explores this room as an individual entity, a place with its own personality, responding to its architecture and its isolation from natural light, outdoor sound and smell: and so the creative team have been on a 12 day treasure hunt! ArtisTree is a dedicated cultural space amongst the nine interconnected office towers of TaiKoo Place. Surroundings of a primarily commercial nature (host to a range of IT and advertising companies), necessitates creative fantasy and other expressive indulgences: a balancing act of sorts.

The artists are playing in a modern, man-made cave of creativity that inhabits the aboveground world and focus is on its ability to inspire movement and stories to emerge. This can be seen as an extension of pre-historical cave painting and ritual that is part of our long history as expressive beings. The characteristics and narratives already exist in the space: we only 'draw the curtain' so to speak. The installed props, set design and sound serve to illuminate these characteristics, as the does the movement: bodies crawl and flutter, embodying the nocturnal creatures of this black box. Breaking down the proscenium divide between audience and performer (as in classic theatre performance), we ask you for a moment to exist like moths by submitting to an attraction to artificial light and to explore like cavers do, discovering new unseen cavities bellow the earth’s surface. Documentation of this experience is highlighted as we map movement, like scientists map caves, philosophers map their understanding of the world and biologists map animal life.

Sight and language dominate our current existence (TV, advertising, Internet and various media), live performance amongst other activities can offer the possibility of a re-organizing of the senses, allowing touch, smell and sound to be as important, if not more, when trying to stimulate a full-bodied experience. In this work we are playing with 'cultivating the attention' of the audience, the cavern you enter also connects to the smaller internal cavernous spaces of body and hopes to unlock the mind's vast cave of imagination.

Structured improvisation within a spatially designed score allow the dancers and musicians to react to each audience in an individual manner: we explore you as foreign beings entering our cave whilst you simultaneously explore us. This two-way dialogue is at the core of this performance and we hope you enjoy being witness to what we have discovered on our expedition. It has been said that we live in a post-colonial globalized world with a hyper-awareness of various cultures, religions and races, yet we are still searching for a connection and understanding to our own bodies and senses. As you navigate through the space you will eventually pass all four stages of a moths life-cycle. To complete this cycle we end ready to begin again.
